Midland Deburr & Finish, a leading metal degreasing and deburring finishing firm based in Lye, Stourbridge, is playing an underststated behind the scenes role in the UK’s push toward electric vehicle (EV) adoption. As the sector grapples with ambitious government targets and shifting consumer demand, the company’s state-of-the-art deburring and degreasing plant has been busy in the finishing of critical battery components for the next generation of vehicles.
Recent figures from the Financial Times revealed that EVs accounted for 18% of new car sales in the UK during the first 10 months of 2024—falling short of the 22% requirement for the year. With the target increasing to 28% in 2025, carmakers have warned that meeting this threshold will be challenging amidst waning consumer demand.
Chris Arrowsmith, Managing Director of Midland Deburr & Finish, weighed in on the situation. “Electric vehicles are undeniably the future of UK automotive manufacturing, and we’re seeing that reflected in the growing volume of EV battery components we process. However, the industry is navigating a tough period. Balancing ambitious targets with market realities will require innovative solutions across the supply chain.”
The UK government has acknowledged the pressure on manufacturers. Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has suggested proposals such as including British-made cars sold abroad in the EV targets and aligning the targets for cars and vans. A government figure told the Financial Times, “Manufacturers have been quite frank about how worried they are,” while assuring that “all options” are being considered to support the industry.
For companies like Midland Deburr & Finish, the rising demand for EV components presents both opportunities and challenges. “We’re proud to support this critical shift in the automotive sector,” Arrowsmith said. “At the same time, the rapid pace of change means businesses like ours need to remain agile and continuously invest in advanced technologies to meet evolving needs, we are doing our bit to support customers by being responsive”
Despite industry concerns, Midland Deburr & Finish is optimistic about the future. “There’s a clear determination across the sector to make the EV transition a success,” Arrowsmith concluded. “With the right support and collaboration, we’re confident the UK can remain at the forefront of automotive innovation.”
